Career highlights
Michelle is fluent in the language of visual and audio storytelling. She’s presented at some of Singapore’s most watched television and live events. She was television commentator for several National Day Parades on Channel 5. Michelle will sit across noted author Elizabeth Gilbert ( Eat, Pray, Love) as invited moderator for the Singapore Writer's Festival 2021 90-min "livestream" event.
The view from my seat at the live TV commentator for Singapore’s National Day Parade. It’s easy to channel the electricity of the crowd when you have this view! You are literally 50-feet in the air. What I enjoy about commentary is this; you have to be comfortable flying without a safety net. There’s really no room for error. You need to be lightening quick to pick up nuances and channel that into a narrative for a huge television audience watching the show across Asia. It takes meticulous attention to detail, you have to speak while taking directions in your earpiece ( so many voices in your head!) and you have to have fun or the right energy won’t come through.
Emcee for the National Day Rally, at rehearsals
A a professional anchor I use techniques to engage audiences. It is a performance at the end of the day, and there certainly are techniques to presenting powerfully and clearly, which I use to improve webcasts.
When I sat across Halimah Yacob our incumbent president, for our one-on-one interview what struck me was how absolutely open she was to speaking with me “live” about her early life. She did not have an easy or privileged start. She spoke about living with very little and how her mother raised the family after losing her husband. I remember watching phone lines light up with tributes from listeners that just poured in throughout the interview. People were moved. They wanted to connect and share what hearing her experience meant to them. She’s the first woman to hold the post of President in Singapore’s history. There’s a great quote from her on the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame ( which I was emcee of the launch of! ) “ Women must realise that while they would like to think that their work speaks for itself, in reality, they do have to take greater charge of their own careers. And be ready to accept invitations to be a board member, even if it means being the sole woman on the board.” -Halimah Yacob, First Woman President of Singapore
With the late Tony Buzan, whose concept of the MindMap still transfixes audiences around the world. I shared with him how his tool for radiant thinking helped me ace my university exams! We had a great chat about that! I still use what he shared with me in our post-show chat to create and plan creative media strategies and to drive sessions for impact.
What I’ve learnt about emceeing over the years is whether its a grand stage at the National Day Rally or the imaginary stage of a digital event , what matters is the ability to put yourself in the place of the audience. What do they want to hear? What tone would suit the event? These questions are a crucial part of my preparation.
Delivering my Capstone Lecture at the Singapore Management University. As a speaker, I share on many topics. I’ve spoken to marketeers, PR experts, in academia, on panels and to a range of businesses on a range of topics including How to Free your Creativity, What Pro-Moderators Know About Getting The Best From Any Panel, How to Plan for Memorable Conversations - The Green Room tips, Charisma and Influence, Content Creator Masterclass - The Rules and Art of Telling Great Stories.
I love everything to do with reading. Here is something rather different, a book cover that I was invited to create that was auctioned off for charity. I’m not a crafts person but when books, art and a cause come together, I had to say yes. My donated collage included patois cards (a card game that reminds me of fun times with my late grandmother) and an attached silver necklace that doubled as a bookmark. My book SOLD!
